The book by James Riker is remarkable in detail. This story relates the Revolutionary wartime experiences of John Van Arsdale who fought in Canada, was wounded and captured at Ft. Montgomery, endured being a prisoner of war on the infamous prison ships. John also served on the Indian frontier. He saved the day as the British departed New York by scaling the greased flagpole to mount halyards for the Stars and Stripes so the throngs of new Americans could cheer and celebrate their new country. This will help historians tell the incredible story of an ordinary man who achieved greatness and who will forever be remembered for his act of courage on Evacuation Day.
